key reminders for all baasl leagues:

  • All players must be registered and have signed a release waiver before participating. No unregistered players are allowed.

  • All players must check in with the referees, using the roster their captain provides, before being able to play.

  • All players are required to wear shin guards.

  • No jewelry is allowed to be worn, including watches.

  • All players, and especially captains, have the responsibility to know and follow all rules.

  • The “Sin Bin” protocol, pursuant to the IFAB/FIFA LOTG, is used in all BAASL leagues.

    • Players receiving a yellow card are temporarily dismissed for a specified period of time and the team plays down.

    • The amount of time depends on the individual league. 5 minutes for 11v11 leagues, 3 minutes for small sided matches.

Modifications to IFAB/FiFa laws of the game:

See Rules for your specific league below in “Rules by Individual League.”

General modifications:

  • Duration of matches (Roughly 3-5 minute halftimes for small sided match. Roughly 10 minutes for 11v11.):

Match durations may be shortened by the league (including any referee) as needed

    • Most 8v8 matches: Two 25 minute halves

      • Albany Saturday 8v8: two 35 minute halves

    • Futsal (5v5) matches: Two 25 minute halves

    • 11v11 matches: Two 45 minute halves

  • No offside for small sided matches (any non 11v11 leagues)

COED specific modifications:

  • There are no slide tackles permitted in any coed leagues. Doing so will result in a direct free kick and possibly a yellow or red card.

    • Slide tackles will include slides to make a play on an ball in immediate proximity to opponents

      • Sliding to play the ball when no opponents are in immediate proximity will be considered to not be an infraction

      • Playing the ball while on the ground will be permitted, assuming it is deemed safe by the referee to do so, even with opponents in immediate proximity

      • Determining what is a slide vs playing on the ground, what is dangerous play, and what is “immediate proximity” is up to the referee’s judgement.

  • Each coed league has a specific “minimum” number of female players that each team needs to field for each match to have play started and or continued to be played.

    • This minimum number of women includes the goalkeeper.

    • For 5v5/Futsal, 1 woman is the minimum required to be fielded.

    • For 8v8, 3 women are the minimum required to be fielded.

    • For 11v11, 5 women are the minimum required to be fielded.

    • A single “Designated Player” may be used to replace a woman.

      • A Designated Player is defined as a male player 44 years old or above.

      • Only 1 designated player may be used to replace a woman at any given time.

    • A team will forfeit their match if they cannot field a minimum number of female players.

      • The minimum number of women to play 5v5 & 8v8 is 1 woman

        • Designated players do not count towards this number

      • The minimum number of women to play 11v11 is 3 women

        • Designated players do count towards this number

Please also note several coed rules that some other leagues use that BAASL doesn’t:

  • Any player on a team may take any restart of play (throw in, free kicks, PKs, etc.).

  • There are no “50/50” rules regarding a male challenging a female for the ball.

  • There are no 2v1 rules.

  • There are no individual player goal limits.
